Social Media Tips for Tradesmen

You’ve will have personal Facebook profile.

You’ve might have also set up a business page on Facebook but, have you actually sat down to think about what you should be doing with it or are you just winging it? The best thing about a Facebook business page is that it can help build up trust with customers with their reviews. Actively share your Facebook page and ask previous customers for reviews.

Social media is about being consistent. How many times can you realistically post each week over 6 months? What is manageable. That is the first thing to consider.

​I am guessing you are a local business, and usually work within the local area. This is where local Facebook Groups come in.

Groups are totally free to advertise and you can advertise your services in there. All you have to do to find them is search on Facebook. You can only use Facebook Groups with your personal account. You can share details about your business though.

Try searching “your local area” and then “small businesses” or “tradesmen” or “buy and sell” and different Groups will appear. You can post in these groups semi-regularly, but do not spam. I would highly recommend searching and using Facebook Groups before you spend any money on advertising.

You will sadly see a lot of sales messages in Facebook Groups. Try not to do this, and just speak to potential clients and build trust with them. Instead of scanning the group looking for one-off sales, play the longer game and build a reputation for your business that is built on trust and value.
Some ideas about what to post in a Facebook Group are:

  1. Answer questions raised in the group, by being helpful you create a good impression of your customer service.
  2. Post helpful tips around your area of expertise, you will raise awareness of your skill set without boring them with sales patter.

Another little pointer is to set up a Google My Business account. This can be done with this link:  Google My Business is a great way for you to rank higher in a Google Search, and it is really simple to fill out.

This is what Google My Business looks like when someone searches your name on Google. It makes your company or business look more official and will result in more people checking out your website or social media.

Finally, make sure you update your Checkatrade account with links to your social media so potential clients can read up to date reviews and find more information about you.
